Grey Ironbark

Eucalyptus paniculata

Australian HardwoodEastern Australia: NSW, South-East Queensland

Appearance

Grey Ironbark heartwood ranges from pale brown to dark chocolate brown, often with reddish tones. The grain is interlocked and the texture is fine to medium. It is extremely dense and heavy — one of the hardest commercially available timbers in the world.

Workability

Grey Ironbark is extremely hard to work due to its density. It requires carbide-tipped tooling and pre-drilling for all fixings. Not suited to hand tools. While challenging to machine, the resulting surface is hard-wearing and long-lasting.
