Meranti (Light Red)
Shorea spp.
Imported HardwoodSoutheast Asia: Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines
Also known as: Seraya, Lauan, Perawan
Appearance
Meranti heartwood ranges from pale pinkish-brown to a deeper reddish-brown depending on the species group. The grain is typically interlocked, producing an attractive ribbon figure on quarter-sawn surfaces. The texture is moderately coarse but even, and the timber has a natural lustre when dressed.
Workability
Meranti machines exceptionally well to a smooth finish and takes standard fittings and fastenings with ease. It glues, stains, and polishes readily. The open grain should be filled before painting for the best result. One of the most versatile timbers for machining and profiling.
