Silvertop Ash
Eucalyptus sieberi
Australian HardwoodSouth-eastern Australia, growing along the coast and tablelands of southern New South Wales, eastern Victoria and north-eastern Tasmania
Also known as: Coast Ash, Black Ash, Silvertop
Appearance
The heartwood is pale to mid brown, sometimes carrying a soft pink tinge, while the narrow sapwood is not always easy to tell apart from it. The timber has a medium and fairly even texture with growth rings often visible and the grain frequently interlocked. Gum veins, pinhole borer markings and pencil streaks are common natural features that give each board its own character.
Workability
Being a dense, hard hardwood it can be firm to work with hand tools, so machining usually calls for sharp, well-set equipment. It takes paint and finishes reasonably and can be steam bent. It needs care during seasoning as it dries slowly and is prone to surface checking on tangential faces.
