Sydney Blue Gum

Eucalyptus saligna

Australian HardwoodCoastal forests of New South Wales and Queensland, Australia

Also known as: Blue Gum, Saligna

Appearance

The heartwood ranges from a dark pink through to a reddish brown, while the sapwood is distinctly paler. The grain is usually straight, sometimes interlocked, with a moderately coarse but even texture. Boards present a clean, consistent look that suits both natural and stained finishes.

Workability

It is easier to season than many other eucalypts and works, dresses and fixes without much trouble. It holds fastenings well, takes a good polish and responds to most finishes. The untreated sapwood is prone to Lyctid borer, so sapwood is best treated or avoided.
