Victorian Ash
Eucalyptus regnans / E. delegatensis
Also known as: Vic Ash, Mountain Ash, Alpine Ash
Appearance
Victorian Ash heartwood is pale straw through to a soft pink-brown, usually with a straight, even grain and an open, moderately coarse texture. Its light, clean look makes it a popular choice for bright interiors and a ready base for natural or stained finishes.
Workability
Victorian Ash is easy to work for a hardwood. It machines and dresses cleanly, glues well, and takes paint, stain and clear finishes readily, which suits it to flooring, furniture and interior joinery.
Common Uses
Availability
Native forest logging in Victoria ended on 1 January 2024, six years ahead of the original 2030 date. With the ban in place, Victorian Ash is no longer being harvested from native forest, so very little new material is entering the market. In practice most "Vic Ash" sold now is Tasmanian Oak, the same group of ash-type eucalypts, which is still harvested in Tasmania.
