American Red Oak

Also known as: Red Oak, Northern Red Oak

Appearance

American Red Oak heartwood is light to medium reddish-brown. The grain is straight with a coarse, uneven texture. It has a more pronounced pinkish-red tone compared to White Oak, and the pores are more open. Widely used in North American construction and increasingly popular in Australian interiors.

Workability

Red Oak machines well and takes stain readily, though the open pores may need filling for a smooth finish. It nails and screws satisfactorily. Not suitable for exterior use as it lacks the natural durability and water resistance of White Oak.
