Jelutong

Dyera costulata

Imported HardwoodSouth-East Asia, principally Malaysia, Indonesia and Borneo

Also known as: Jelutung, Letong, Pontianak

Appearance

Jelutong is a pale cream to light straw colour, with little contrast between sapwood and heartwood, and it can darken slightly with age. The grain is usually straight and the texture is fine and even, giving a clean uniform surface. A distinctive feature is the presence of latex passages, which show up as small dark traces or streaks scattered through the wood. These traces are a natural characteristic of the species and need to be considered when selecting boards for fine work.

Workability

Jelutong works very easily by hand and machine, cutting cleanly and holding crisp detail, which is why it is favoured for carving and pattern-making. It glues, stains and finishes well, and turns nicely. The latex passages can be slightly resinous, so tools may need occasional cleaning, but overall it is one of the more forgiving timbers to shape.
