PNG Rosewood
Pterocarpus indicus
Imported HardwoodPapua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and parts of South-East Asia including Indonesia and the Philippines
Also known as: New Guinea Rosewood, Papua New Guinea Rosewood, Narra
Appearance
The heartwood runs from golden brown through to a deep, almost blood-red brown, often with attractive flame or ribbon figure from its interlocked grain. The sapwood is a pale yellow and is clearly distinct from the heartwood. Surfaces take a high natural polish and develop a soft lustre. Colour can vary noticeably from board to board.
Workability
PNG Rosewood is easy to work with both hand and machine tools and finishes cleanly. It glues and polishes well, though the interlocked grain can need care when dressing to avoid tear-out. The heartwood is not always receptive to staining, so a clear finish often suits it best.
