Baltic Pine
Pinus sylvestris
SoftwoodNorthern Europe: Scandinavia, Baltic States, Russia
Also known as: Scots Pine, European Redwood, Red Deal
Appearance
Baltic Pine heartwood is pale reddish-brown to honey-coloured, with clearly defined growth rings and a fine, even texture. The grain is generally straight. Recycled Baltic Pine from old buildings is highly sought after for its aged character, tight grain, and warm patina developed over decades.
Workability
Baltic Pine is easy to work with both hand and machine tools. It takes stain, paint, and clear finishes well. The timber has a pleasant resinous scent when freshly cut. Recycled Baltic Pine is particularly valued in Australia for restoration and character flooring projects.
